Lectionary Class: A lectionary is a list of scriptures readings assigned to be read on a particular day. Many Christian churches around the world used the Revised Common Lectionary, a three-year cycle beginning in Advent. Each year the Gospel of Matthew, Mark or Luke is read primarily with the Gospel of John interspersed throughout all three years. The class studies the lessons of the day, how they are related and how they can impact us. The class meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Garden Room.
The Friendship Class is studying the Creeds and will begin a new study soon on Ecclesiastes. Join the class for this fascinating study. The class, led by Darilyn Krieger, meets in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays.
Dream. Think. Be. Do. is a 20-session DVD-based group study exploring Christian theology. This class will help newcomers and church veterans study Christianity and ponder what a meaningful faith might look like in today's world. The class, led by Tom Allen, begins on Sept. 18 in the Parish Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Pastor's Class - Introduction-to-Lutheranism: While geared for newcomers and for those considering membership, it is also an excellent refresher course on our faith for longer term members. The classis offered throughout the year. Please check back for next offering.
ELCA's Book of Faith Initiative at Salem
Salem is participating in the ELCA's five-year initiative, "
The Book of Faith", which encourages Lutherans to "become more fluent in the first language of our faith, the Scriptures." Salem's Book of Faith involvement includes a Daily Reading Plan with readings assigned for each day. "Y.T.T.", or "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" reading is encouraged, whereby each passage is read three times. This reading style allows for a more complete understanding of the context of each daily passage and a greater familiarity with the selected passages.Download the Book of Faith Reading Plan July-Dec. 2011 (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Wednesday Morning Study
The Wednesday Morning Bible Study begins its 30th season this month! The study of Paul's letters to the Thessalonians will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Thessalonica was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, important for its location on both sea and land routes to travel. Paul founded the congregation in Thessalonica after he life Philippi. The letter reflects the life of a congregation that was devoted to its faith but also a community threatened by social pressures and at times outright persecution to turn back to the life from which they had come. Many believe 1 Thessalonians was one of Paul's earliest letters. Join Pastor Roschke for this interesting study!
Weekend of Theology
Salem offers a Weekend of Theology where a guest theologian is invited to our congregation. The weekend serves as an opportunity for our membership to become acquainted with one of our ELCA theologians and to explore a specific topic or issue. Please mark your calendar now for February 10-12, 2012 when we welcome Pastor Michael Rinehart, Bishop of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod.
