Salem Suppers

A supper fellowship ministry

Interested in getting to know some others from the congregation a little better? Enjoy entertaining in your home? Enjoy eating out at restaurants? If you answered "yes" to any of the above, Salem Suppers are for you!

Salem Suppers originated at Salem in the 1980’s as a way for congregation members to meet others and to enjoy regular fellowship. We had such fun with them that we are going to try them again – 21st century style. Details are below. This time around, there’s a new option for people who don’t particularly enjoy entertaining in their homes…Salem Suppers Out! Salem Suppers Out provides the same opportunity for fellowship over a meal, but groups meet in restaurants instead of in homes.

To join a Salem Suppers group, sign up in the Narthex or call the Church Office (713/723-3509) and leave a message for Susan Senti. Remember, the idea is to meet some new folks, so don’t be surprised if you are matched with someone you don’t know so well! For more information, call the Church Office.

Salem Suppers

1. Salem Suppers is for those adults who enjoy entertaining in their home.

2. Each group will consist of four units (couples or singles). Each group may decide if children and/or youth may attend.

3. There will be a group leader for the first month that will host the first supper, set a date and coordinate with everyone in the group. Supper hosts provide the main dish and drinks. Other households provide salad, side dishes and dessert (the monthly host coordinates who will bring what).

4. At the first supper, a new leader for the next month will be decided and a date and time chosen for the next month. The new leader will provide the main dish and coordinate with the other households about the other foods.

5. To get to know each other better, the group may decide each person can bring an item (or picture) to the dinner that tells something about them. Each month a new item can be agreed upon.

6. Salem Suppers can occur any evening, at the group’s discretion.

7. After the four suppers, those desiring to continue this fellowship may sign up again and join a different group.

8. Suppers are not planned for the summer months. Salem Suppers will run February through May and September through December.

9. As new members join Salem, they will be encouraged to participate in Salem Suppers and may be assigned to the group as a fifth unit until new groups are formed.

Salem Suppers Out

(most of the same guidelines apply; only the changes are noted below)

1. Salem Suppers Out is for those adults who prefer to eat out rather than entertain in their home.

2. The group leader for the month is responsible for getting a consensus on a date for the first supper, recommending a restaurant, getting directions to and phone number for the restaurant, and coordinating with everyone in the group.

3. Once a date and restaurant are decided, the group leader is responsible for calling the restaurant to make reservations and let the restaurant know there will be separate checks (a round table may be requested also to allow maximum fellowship). It is recommended that everyone exchange cell phone numbers to facilitate better communication.

4. At the first supper, a new leader for the next month will be decided and a date and time chosen for the next month. The new leader will choose a new restaurant and will be responsible for making reservations and coordinating with everyone in the group. This process is repeated for the third and fourth months.
