Sunday Classes
Salem offers many opportunities for study and growth through adult education and Sunday Church School for children. Our children's program, Salem ALIVE!, begins at 9:15, and youth and adult classes begin at 9:30.
Salem ALIVE! Sunday Morning Education for Children
Salem ALIVE! is our Sunday morning educational time for children and youth. Children ages four and up gather for a craft or other introductory activity, upbeat and lively songs, and a Bible story presentation done all together. Bible stories are presented in various ways - sometimes through drama, through storytelling, through images and visuals - we get creative in sharing the Good News with children! After the larger group time is over, children divide into age-level groups to further explore the story for the day and engage in age-appropriate activities that allow them to respond to God's truth for them. This year, the study focus for Salem ALIVE! is the Revised Common Lectionary that is used in worship.

Winter Adult Class Sessions
In the fall, four informative and formative classes will be offered for adults from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
"Building on Grace, Building on Tradition": As we build our new worship space, we are not only "building on grace", we are building on a tradition of worship - a tradition that traces its roots back to the earliest Biblical stories. Join us in the new year for a Sunday morning adult education forum in which we study the influences of this tradition and learn how our new worship space reflects the powerful worship tradition that we claim at Salem.
Building on Grade, Building on Tradition" will be a Biblical, historical and architectural study of Christian worship and how that tradition has shaped worship spaces throughout time. It will conclude with a study of our new worship space and how the traditional of the past and the innovations of today are reflected in its design and construction. Come join us at 9:30 a.m. n the Fellowship Hall starting Jan. 6.
The Friendship Class is beginning a new study on the scriptural basis for Handel's lyrics in The Messiah oratorio on Sunday, Jan. 6. The work was composed in the summer of 1741 and premiered in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742. The work is divided into three parts which address specific events in the life of Christ. Par One is concerned primarily with the Advent and Christmas stories. Par Two chronicles Christ's passion, resurrection and ascension. Part Three is based primarily on the events told in the Revelation to St. John. Although Messiah deals with the New Testament story of Christ's life, a majority of the texts used to tell the story were selected from the Old Testament prophetic books of Isaiah, Haggai, and Malachi. The class, led by Darilyn Krieger, meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Parlor.
"Breaking Ground" is a study led by Neil Orts. It meets in the Library. A free-wheeling exploration of Christian history, faith and life, this study group dares to go to the edges to test, expand and deepen our life in Christ. During February, the group will read and discuss Everything Must Change by Brian D. McLaren. The book is available at most major bookstores and at www.amazon.com.
