Education

Sunday Classes

Salem offers many opportunities for study and growth through adult education and Sunday Church School for children.  All classes for children, youth and adults begin at 9:30 and end at 10:30 a.m.  You are invited to join any of the classes at any time during the year.

Salem ALIVE! Morning Education for Children and Youth

Salem ALIVE! is our Sunday Church School educational time for children and youth.

Adult Classes

Book of Faith Group Discussions:  The Book of Faith Initiative is a five-year effort of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to help people become more fluent in the first language of faith, the language of Scripture.  A group discussion is currently held each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Garden Room.

Lectionary Class:  A lectionary is a list of scriptures readings assigned to be read on a particular day.  Many Christian churches around the world used the Revised Common Lectionary, a three-year cycle beginning in Advent.  Each year the Gospel of Matthew, Mark or Luke is read primarily with the Gospel of John interspersed throughout all three years.  The class studies the lessons of the day, how they are related and how they can impact us.  The class meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Dream.  Think.  Be.  Do. is a 20-session DVD-based group study exploring Christian theology.  This class helps newcomers and church veterans study Christianity and ponder what a meaningful faith might look like in today's world.  The class, led by Tom Allen, meets in the Parish Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study began its 30th year this fall.  The class is currently studying the Gospel according to St. Mark.  Mark's story of Jesus is the primary gospel in our lectionary readings this church year.  Mark's account of the life of Jesus not only gives an active and fast-paced narrative but also, perhaps, was written in a context of the first-century Christians who were beginning to face persecution.  Join Pastor Roschke on Wednesdays in the Fellowship Hall, 9:30-11:00 a.m. for this interesting study!

ELCA's Book of Faith Initiative at Salem

Salem is participating in the ELCA's five-year initiative, "The Book of Faith", which encourages Lutherans to "become more fluent in the first language of our faith, the Scriptures."  Salem's Book of Faith involvement includes a Daily Reading Plan with readings assigned for each day.  "Y.T.T.", or "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" reading is encouraged, whereby each passage is read three times.  This reading style allows for a more complete understanding of the context of each daily passage and a greater familiarity with the selected passages.

Weekend of Theology

Salem offers a Weekend of Theology where a guest theologian is invited to our congregation.  The weekend serves as an opportunity for our membership to become acquainted with one of our ELCA theologians and to explore a specific topic or issue.  Please mark your calendar now for February 10-12, 2012 when we welcome Pastor Michael Rinehart, Bishop of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod.  Bishop Rinehart plans to explore the prophetic call for compassion and justice, the life of Jesus and the suffering servant and St. Paul's theology of love and humility.  Themes through the weekend will include justice, humility and love.  The Schedule:  Friday, Feb. 10, 7:15-9:00 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 11 , 8:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 12, 9:30-10:30 a.m.  (Bishop Rinehart will also preach at worship at 8:00 and 11:00 a.m.)

Library

The Salem library is small but has some excellent resources for study and devotion.  The library is located in the administrative wing, across the hall from the Church Office.
