Salem Serving Day

"What is Salem Serving Day?"

Salem Serving Day is a day that is set aside for every person in the congregation to participate in some form of service activity in and around the community.  Salem Serving Day is set for October 16, and will include 10 different projects to benefit organizations and people in and around our community.  See below for answers to frequently asked questions about Salem Serving Day.  Also see our project list for descriptions of the projects available to choose from.

How do I sign up? Visit the narthex and sign up on our huge poster for the site where you would like to serve. Or, e-mail the church office at office@salemhouston.org with your project request and T-shirt size and we will put your name down for your requested project, if the project team still has space for you.

How will I know what to do, where to go, what to bring, and all the other details for my work site? Each work site has a team captain who is responsible for contacting everyone who has volunteered to serve on his/her team. Team captains are presently phoning servers on their teams. If you'd like to know who your team captain is, call the Church Office at 713/723-3509 or check the sign-up sheets in the narthex.

What if I am not physically able to serve? One of our serving options is to participate on a Prayer Team, which will gather at Salem during the afternoon of Oct. 16 to pray for those who are serving in our community, as well as those who are serving in many different ways in our congregation. If you are not able to participate in any of the other service projects, please sign up for the Prayer Team and participate in Salem Serving Day in that way.

What should I wear? Special Salem Serving Day T-shirts have been ordered for the occasion. We are using the same yellow Salem Serving Day shirts we wore in 2003.  If you do not have one, the shirts will be distributed on Sunday, Oct. 9. You may wear long pants, jeans or shorts depending on what you will be comfortable in to perform your service project. Come to worship on Oct. 16 wearing your Salem Serving Day T-shirt and the clothes you plan to wear to your work site.

EVERYONE will get a T-shirt? Isn’t that going to be expensive? No, not if everyone can chip in a small amount to help cover the cost of the shirts. If you are able and willing, $6 donations per T-shirt will be accepted to help offset the cost (2XL and larger are $2 extra). Everyone will receive a T-shirt; donations are welcome and appreciated but are not required to receive a shirt.

Do I need to bring anything? Bring a water bottle labeled with your name. If you are working on an outside project, you may also want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray and a hat. Some projects may also require special tools or items (gardening gloves, shovels, etc.). If your project has any special needs, your team captain will let you know what else to bring. A sack lunch and water for your work site will be provided.

How long will we be serving on Oct. 16? We will depart for our work sites following the worship. Most groups will serve until about 3:00 p.m. or as appropriate to the task. Some groups may have slightly different schedules; contact your team captain for more details.

What is the schedule for Oct. 16? The schedule will basically run as normal except for worship times. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. Sunday Church School will begin at 9:15 a.m. for children but will end at 9:45 a.m. We will have ONE worship service at 10:00 a.m.  We will NOT have worship services at 8:00 or 11:00 a.m. on Salem Serving Day! After the service we will eat lunch which will be provided and depart for our work sites.
